I clearly remember my high school basketball coach telling me when I was 16 to "protect your legs from injuries by wearing knee and ankle sleeves during practice sessions and games". Of course, at the time I felt this was completely unnecessary. Fast forward 18 months - while playing in the regional finals game during my senior year of high school, I jumped up to grab a rebound and landed on my teammate's foot. My knee turned at an awkward angle, tearing the ligaments and fracturing the bones there. After several months of healing and rehab, I thought I had put the injury behind me. Now I am 42 years old and have no ambitions to participate in any sort of contact sports :) I take up CrossFit and working out at the gym to stay (somewhat) fit. During my “Workout Of The Day”, I am doing 3 sets of 25 burpees each. Relatively harmless.... until I feel a sharp pain followed by soreness in my right knee. I chalk it up to my age: I am not a teenager anymore! The next day, my knee is so sore I can hardly put any weight on it. I make an appointment with my physician to get my knee checked out. After several days of MRIs, x-rays, follow up doctor visits etc, it turns out that I have somehow managed to tear the scar tissue from my old knee injury. The doctor recommended giving my legs some rest and working with a professional to rehab my knee.

By the end of the rehab period, I was hesitant to push myself while working out which meant I couldn’t really go all out and exercise regularly. I lost confidence in my physical abilities, started favoring my knees and ankles when I was running on a treadmill, and started disliking spending time at the gym. Rigorous exercise was out of question. For someone who has been exercising regularly his whole life, this was severely disheartening. Then I recalled my basketball coach's words: "Protect your legs! Wear knee and ankle sleeves". I researched several knee sleeves providers, bought a pair, and diligently started wearing knee and ankle sleeves while working out. This made a world of difference! I am now back to exercising regularly without worrying too much about my knees and ankles. Though the range of motions is somewhat limited due to scar tissue in my right knee, I am able to work out regularly without any discomfort. Anyone can injure their knees and ankles badly, not just professional athletes. Injuries are very common and are often a result of a quick twist or a blow to the knee / ankle or overuse of the joints. Regardless of the type of soft tissue that is damaged, it is very painful. Injuries can persist for years and be disruptive to your way of life. Recovery can take a long time but protection and proper healing is essential to regain strength and get us back to the activities we enjoy!
